Obituary for Walter W. "Mike" Turgiss

Walter "Mike" W. Turgiss, a resident of North Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 29th, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Woburn on March 6, 1932, the son of William W. and Alice (Chadwick) Turgiss.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley (Moore) Turgiss, their children, Lynn (Turgiss) Nosek and her husband, Michael, Gary Turgiss and his partner, Barbara Merrill, Glen Turgiss and his wife, Laura, Greg Turgiss and his wife, Michele, and his sister-in-law, Grace Eves. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Lauryn Nosek, Christopher Nosek, Rebecca (Turgiss) Buckless and her husband, Glen, Catherine Turgiss, Bryan Turgiss, Meghan (Turgiss) Viger and her husband, Jeff, Jenny (Turgiss) Gray and her husband, John, Kristen (Turgiss) Velazquez and her husband, William, eight great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Clyde Shufelt, and sister-in-law, Jean Broughton.

Walter was a graduate of Woburn Memorial High School class of 1949. He attended Northeastern University where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering.

He was employed at GenRad and as a civilian electrical engineer in the Air Force at Hanscom Field. After retirement from Hanscom he worked as the COO for Sumaria Systems.

He was active in youth sports serving as a coach and booster for many years. He was a member of Nabnassett Lake Country Club and enjoyed golfing, especially on weekends with his boys. He spent many summer vacations with his family on the lakes of Maine. Walter was an avid sports fan who loved his Boston teams and also liked to spend time solving puzzles and playing cribbage.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4-7 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.

His funeral service will be held on Friday morning at 10 o'clock in the funeral home.

Interment will follow in West Chelmsford Cemetery.

The Turgiss family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Winchester Hospital department of Interventional Radiology for their incredible support in Walter Turgiss’ final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to the Radiology Fund at Winchester Hospital Foundation, 41 Highland Ave., Winchester, MA 01890 or to All Care VNA, Development Department, 210 Market Street, Lynn MA 01901.
