Alfonso Silloren Hontanar, age 87, of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Merlita (Acsay) Hontanar with whom he shared 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2019.

He was born on January 31, 1933, in New Lucena, Iloilo, Philippines, and was a son of the late Apolonio P. and Precentacion S. (Silloren) Hontanar.

He was raised in New Lucena, Iloilo, where he graduated from high school. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from St. Augustine University, where he met his future wife Merlita. He was a teacher at Casit-An Elementary School in Laua-An, Antique, Philippines for 30 years. After his retirement in 1994, he came to the United States where he became a citizen. He spent 10 years traveling back and forth working at the commissary at Fort Myer military base in Virginia, and spending time in Chelmsford. In Alfonso’s spare time he enjoyed singing karaoke, walking, and running. He was an avid follower of politics and enjoyed writing letters to elected officials. Family was most important to Alfonso, as he brought 2 of his daughters and 6 grandchildren to America. He loved gathering with family and friends to enjoy a nice meal. He cherished his many trips back to the Philippines to visit his beloved wife Merlita. His zest for life will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Every time I see Uncle Alfonso's face he reminds me so much of his brother (my dad), Gabrielle S. Huntanar. See the two photos and guess who is who. This is a sad time, but I also think that Uncle Alfonso lived a great life and made to the grand old age of 87, and he had so many family members and friends at his side. Once again, our condolences.
