Obituary for Thomas E. Peters

Thomas E. Peters passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the age of 93 at the Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelmsford. He was the beloved husband of Catherine (Steinhauer) Peters with whom he shared 53 years of marriage.

Thomas was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 10, 1929, and was the son of the late Thomas E. and Naomi (Lawrence) Peters.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Long Island University and went on to attain his master’s degree in chemical engineering from Adelphi University in NY. He was an accomplished chemical engineer who won many patent awards for General Telephone and Electronics from which he retired at the age of 63. He was instrumental in developing color for color TV and the creation of the laser. He was pursuing his PHD but had to stop to help his children with their studies. Thomas published many articles for Scientific American magazine.

As a husband and father no one could ask for better because he was the best. He was kind, loving, supportive and very giving and generous to his family. Reading the “The Night Before Christmas” was a family tradition every Christmas Eve from the same book that he was read to as a boy. Tom was an avid reader, and he loved to travel with his wife Cathy. Together they bought a winter home in Florida that they really enjoyed with family and friends. Tom was a devoted family man, and he was always there whenever you needed him for advice, coaching basketball, chaperoning Boy Scout trips, and attending many graduations and sporting events. He enjoyed playing the guitar in his younger years and loved watching the Celtics and Patriot games. Most of all, Tom cherished the time he spent with his family.

Tom is predeceased by his wife Joan (Kissam) Peters. He then married a wonderful woman, mother, and best friend Cathy Peters, and all of us are so grateful for everything she has done.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Cathy, his children, Barbara Peters Scanzano, James Peters, Jeanne Peters Harrison (Rocky), Karen Hudson (Brad), and Janice Spadafore (Michael); his grandchildren, Jillian Roy (Charlie), Amy Spadafore, Christopher, Bryan and Lauren Scanzano, Trevor Harrison, Eric and Kim Peters, and Robbie Hudson, and his great grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob, Sofia, Katie, and Charlie Roy.

Visiting Hours will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. His funeral service and interment will be held privately. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Dementia Society of America at dementiasociety.org.
