Obituary for Susan Rose Hammond (Gallagher)

CHELMSFORD – Susan Rose (Gallagher) Hammond, 79, formerly of Chelmsford, MA and a longtime resident of Fairport, NY passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at home with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Edmund Thompson “Stubby” Hammond, Jr., with whom she shared 35 years of marriage and 5 children before his passing in 2002.

She was born on December 10, 1941 in Lowell and was the daughter of the late Charles Leo and Louise (Kennedy) Gallagher.

Susan was raised in Chelmsford and was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Tyngsboro, Class of 1959. She attended Marymount College and Suffolk University in Boston, MA where she received her bachelor’s degree in Art. Later, she attended Nazareth College in Rochester, NY where she received her master’s degree in Education.

Susan and Stubby raised 5 children together. She adored being a mother and a grandmother to their 12 grandchildren. She would often say the greatest joy of her life was being a mom.

Susan’s other greatest joy in life was teaching. She was the reading teacher at St. Pius X (Tenth) School in Rochester, NY. After returning to Massachusetts, she worked at the Arlington School in Lawrence before finishing her career at the James F. Hennessey School in Lawrence. She had a profound impact on her students’ lives just by being the kind, nurturing soul that she was.

Susan loved the beach, especially summers growing up in Hampton, near Plaice Cove and time spent on Cape Cod. She enjoyed art, traveling and being a part of her community. In her spare time, Susan enjoyed drawing and painting. More than anything, she loved her family and especially cherished time spent with her twelve grandchildren. She was truly a sweet and generous person who had a gentle spirit. Susan will be remembered as a loving person who had a smile that lit up any room.

She is survived by her sister, Louise Gosselin of Chelmsford, MA, and her brother, Charles Gallagher of Hampton, NH, her 5 children; Wendy Brooks, and her husband, Christopher Brooks of Durham, NH, Monique Boisvert, and her husband, Eric Boisvert of Northfield, NH, Meredith Kaufman, and her husband, Josh Kaufman of Groton, MA, Andrew Hammond, and his wife, Becky Hammond of Grafton, MA, and Daniel Hammond, and his wife, Amy Hammond of Windham, ME, her grandchildren; Edmund Hammond, Sam, Charlie, Aidan, Mae, and Ganya Brooks, Emma and Erin Kaufman, Ava, Nolan, and Addison Hammond, and her newest grandchild, Meara Hammond.
