Obituary for Sarah A. Quinn

Print
Sarah Anne Quinn, PhD, 88, passed peacefully in her sleep at Lowell General Hospital, in October 2018, surrounded by loved ones. She had a long, happy life and enjoyed a successful career in Psychology.

Dr. Quinn, was the Director of Arbour Counseling Services in Lowell for more than 30 years, and under her leadership the agency quadrupled in size. She directed the Westboro State Hospital, was the manager of the Human Services Department of the Martha Eliot Health Center of Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, and had a joint appointment with the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical School.

Born in New York City, the oldest child of two, she liked to say that although neither parent had the opportunity to finish grammar school, they encouraged Sarah and her brother to get graduate degrees. In the “good old days” she said that Hunter College in NYC cost only $5 a semester, books included. Graduate School at Perdue University was supported by a public health grant.

Dr. Quinn is predeceased by her parents Vincent P. and Josephine M. Quinn, and leaves a daughter, Jayne Segman, a son, Anthony Segman, and grandson, Kyle, Ralph Segman (her former husband), her brother, Jerome Quinn, nieces, nephews, many cousins, and great friends.

Sarah wished to thank her friends and co-workers for her experiences. Ms. Quinn was an individual and kind woman, and a loving mother. She was Miss Hunter College in 1949, and supported women’s issues and helping working class communities.
