Obituary for Philip A. Dargie

Philip “Phil” Allen Dargie, 92, died of natural causes on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH. He was born January 29, 1930, in Pawtucket, RI to Philida Theophile Dargie and Florence Ida (McLaughlin) Dargie. He is survived by his wife Jean Ann Apostolakes.

He was a veteran who enlisted in the Army in May 1951 and served as a forward observer for the field artillery from 1951 to May 1953 in the 235th Field Artillery Observation Battalion stationed on the Main Line of Resistance overlooking the Chorwon Valley in Korea.

He earned a BS in Textile Engineering from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MS in Textile Technology from The Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville, VA. He worked in the textile industry during his career in various capacities including Textile Engineering and Quality Systems at several companies including Malden Mills and Velcro. He was a self-employed ISO 9000 Quality Systems Consultant and Auditor at the end of his career where he spent time at companies in Spain and Mauritius. He was awarded one textile machinery patent.

He lived in various places including 25 years in Andover, MA, and 32 years in Merrimack, NH. He served as an Andover Registrar, established a state-recognized Historical Commission for Andover, and served as the first Chairman of the Commission. He developed a survey of houses in Andover which had historical significance in 1976. He was very active in the Andover Village Improvement Society (AVIS) where he served on the Board of Trustees and established the Warden System to manage the properties. He started an annual AVIS cross-country ski/hike event in 1970 that ran for 50 years.

He had many interests during his life including kayaking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and dancing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Phil is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jean Ann (Tuttisanti) Apostolakes; his sister-in-law Ruth Dargie; his two daughters: Michelle Freck and her husband, Bob of Houston, Texas, and Denise Hutchins and her husband Danny of Meredith, NH; his two sons: Paul Dargie and his wife, Joan of Milford, NH, and David Dargie and his wife Lisa of Andover, MA and Houston, Texas; his seven grandchildren: Andrew Ferguson, Patrick Ferguson, Jenna Dargie, Jillian Dargie, Michael Dargie, Aline Dargie, and Stephen Dargie; three great-grandchildren; his five Apostolakes stepsons: James and his wife Lisa of Groton, MA, Jeff and his partner Jackie Smith of Hudson, NH and former wife Barbara of Chelmsford, MA, John and his wife Patty of Greenfield Township, PA, Jay and his wife Karen of Dracut, MA, and Jared and his wife Missy of Townsend, MA; ten Apostolakes step-grandchildren: Christopher, James Jr, Nicholas, Samantha, Victoria, Jesse, Jeremy, Kieran, Taylor, and Brittany; four step-great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews: Janis Visaggio, Hallie Clark, Philip Dargie, Joseph Dargie, Patty Ednie, John Salemi, Denis Roberts, Lise Roberts, Don Roberts, Michael Roberts, JoAnn Schlick, Paula Berghman, Marc Dube, Paul Dube, Peter Dube, and Nan Fickett.

He was predeceased by his brother, Paul Dargie, his sister, Charlotte Talarico, and her husband Al; his first wife Doris (Girouard, Dargie) Batey, and her husband, David Batey; and his step-grandchild Ryan Apostolakes.
