Newcomb D. Cole Jr, 78, a longtime resident of North Chelmsford, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at Lowell General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Sally A. Henry-Cole with whom he shared 35 years of marriage.
He was born in New York City, NY on May 20, 1941 to the late Newcomb D. Sr. and Elizabeth (Clements) Cole.
Newcomb grew up in New York City and attended Choate Rosemary Hall (class of 1959). He was a graduate of Cornell University (1965) and studied English Literature, Russian Language, History, Writing and
Poetry.
Newcomb was a retired Financial Planner.
Newcomb was an animal lover and enjoyed walking his dog Ollie. He had many beloved animals who preceded him including his Saint Bernard, Cody and cats, Max, Peaches and Maxwell. He was an avid reader, sudoku and crossword player with a sesquipedalian vocabulary. He enjoyed playing Pogo online with many beloved friends around the country.
As a teenager, Newcomb enjoyed summers cowboying in Wyoming. His sense of adventure grew from those summers he spent under the big sky. Newcomb found his passion for skydiving in 1963 and was elated when he could share in the excitement alongside his children, Lauren and Ian, in their first jump in 2011. He also enjoyed traveling, and fondly remembered his trip to the Soviet Union in 1962 with his classmates, being among the first tourists allowed within the country.
Newcomb enjoyed watching and talking about sports, especially the New England Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed playing and watching golf. Newcomb, also affectionately known by his grandchildren as, “PopPop”, was always known to be the one at the dinner table to make a silly face or have his glasses upside down to get a giggle.
Newcomb was a Stephens Minister for Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, where he and his family were members for several years.
In addition to his loving wife Sally, Newcomb leaves his children Lauren Scott and her husband Nick of Chelmsford, Ian of Chelmsford, Newcomb Cole III and his wife Chilton of Rhode Island, and Alden and his wife Susan of North Carolina and seven grandchildren William and Nolan Scott, Newcomb IV, Tristram, and Isabella Cole, and Peyton and Brewer Cole, as well as, his beloved dog Ollie and grand-dog Tilly. He is also survived by his sister Betsy Armbrust.
