Obituary for Michael E. Murphy

Michael Edward Murphy, 65, passed away at home peacefully on April 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Patricia (Yanarella) Murphy, with whom he enjoyed 40 years of marriage.

Born in Williamsport, PA, on February 25, 1959, he was the son of the late Edward and Ann (Cosentine) Murphy. Raised in Geneva, New York, Mike was a graduate of DeSales High School and Fordham University. He lived and worked in Syracuse before relocating to Chelmsford, MA, in 1993. Mike was the Chief Financial Officer for Berenson Associates Inc. in Boston, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 2019.

He was happiest surrounded by his family, watching and talking sports, listening to music, and working around the house and yard. He also loved playing cards on Friday nights, going to the driving range, the X-Files, making people laugh, avoiding rush hour, listing the Harry Potter movies in order of priority, and ice cream.

A devoted father and grandfather, Mike leaves behind a loving family, including Melissa (Murphy) Parkinson and her husband Evan of Everett, MA; Bridget Murphy; Anna Murphy; and a beautiful granddaughter, Lily. He was predeceased by his father-in-law, Joseph R. Yanarella of Beacon, NY, and is survived by his two sisters, Debra Murphy (Tim Coutlee) and Teresa Yeckley of Geneva, NY, and brother Mark Murphy (Cathy Hastings) of Rochester, NY. Mike is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Jane (Reilley) Yanarella of Beacon, NY, brother-in-law Joseph Yanarella (Maria) of Beacon, NY, sisters-in-law Kathy Hall (Jack) of Six Mile, SC and Marie Watson (Walter) of Eastham, MA, as well as several nephews and a niece.

Despite a dementia diagnosis at 59 and the gradual loss of his abilities and independence, his positivity and gratitude for the blessings he had demonstrated his resilience, faith, and strength of character.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Gonzalez, Dr. Moray, and the nurses and providers at Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provided.

Visiting hours for family and friends will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 4pm to 7pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 5, at 11am at St. Mary Church, 25 North Road, Chelmsford. Kindly meet at the Church. Interment will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mike’s name to The Wish Project (thewishproject.org).
