Katie M. (Mares) Harmon, 96, a resident of Chelmsford, formerly of Ormond Beach, FL and Nashua, NH, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at her home. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert B. Harmon with whom she shared 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2000.
She was born in Santa Rosa, NM and was a daughter of the late Desiderio and Francisca (Armijo) Mares. The family moved to southern California during the Great Depression. Katie worked at March AFB where she met and was swept off her feet by Robert B Harmon. They were married six weeks later. They soon moved to Massachusetts, settling in Chelmsford, where they raised a family and built a business.
Katie has been a member of St Mary’s since 1954, was active in Woman’s Sodality and taught religious instruction. Katie loved to bowl and was in several leagues. She loved golf even more and you could regularly see her at Indigo C.C in Florida in the winter and Vesper C.C. in the summer. She would probably like you to know that she made a hole-in-one at Vesper. But, her greatest love of all was and always will be her family.
Later, Katie retired to the comforts of home and family where she was the center of all our lives.
Katie leaves her beloved daughters: Kay Catto (Roger Racy) of Long Beach, CA and Deborah Whitworth (William Whitworth) of Chelmsford; her daughter-in-law, Karen Harmon of Sarasota, FL; her nine grandchildren: Kay, Lisa, Katelin, Cara, Lauren, Joshua, Jennifer, Rachel, and Joseph; 12 great grandchildren: Stephen, Benjamin, Ashley, Brady, Kristin, Alexis, Bruce, Katie, Declan, Nolan, Gavin and Jack; and also 3 great-great grandchildren: Kaylin, Nora and Rachel. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was especially close with her niece, Helen.
Sadly, she was predeceased by her son Joseph R. Harmon who passed away in 1961 and by her son Robert L. Harmon who passed away in 2020. Katie looked forward to being reunited with her sons in Heaven.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 25, at 11 am at St. Mary’s Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY GATHER AT THE CHURCH. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. It being her wish, visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to VNA Hospice online at
