Obituary for Joseph Paul Raneri

Joseph Paul Raneri, 101, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Rosa Patricia (Alioto) Raneri with whom he shared 66 years of marriage until her passing in 2014.

He was born in Boston on October 5, 1921, and was the son of the late Andrew and Josephine (Ruggeri) Raneri.

Joseph grew up in the West End of Boston, with his late brothers, Leo, Paul, and Salvatore, and late sisters, Santa Unni and Josephine Campanella. He served our Nation with distinction in the US Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Joseph earned many commendations, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, due to his courage during three separate campaigns including Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

After his service, Joseph returned home, married the love of his life Rosa, and worked until his retirement at Hanscom Airforce Base. Together, Joseph and Rosa raised their seven children who he leaves, Michael Raneri, Pauline Rock, Nancy Benetti, Joseph Raneri, Jr., Andrew Raneri, Linda Frost, and Regina Bellegarde; twenty grandchildren; and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Joseph was cherished by his children and grandchildren and was the heart and soul of the family. All holidays and celebrations were marked by his love of cooking, music and family gatherings. His legacy of service to our country, faith in God and devotion to family lives on as an inspiration to those he leaves behind.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 8:30 am – 10:00 am at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 am at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford, following the visitation. Interment with full military honors will take place in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.
