Obituary for John E. Smith Sr.
John E. Smith Sr., age 87, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away at Northwood Rehab and Health Care Center in Lowell on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Mae (Cobuccio) Smith with whom he enjoyed 63 years of marriage.
He was born in Swampscott on November 5, 1934 and was the son of the late Elroy and Ethel (Chase) Smith.
John was raised in Charlestown and was a graduate of Charlestown High School, class of 1952. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force proudly serving his country as tactical aircraft maintenance, crew chief. John was employed at Raytheon retiring after 39 years. During his time at Raytheon, he worked at the Waltham, Andover and Lowell facilities as draftsman and mechanical design engineer. He loved to play cribbage, watch old movies and could always be found on the golf course. John cherished the time spent with his family. He will be dearly missed.
In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by his children; Donna L. Bigold of Dracut, Carolann Smith (Davis) and her husband George T. Davis of Dracut, Valerie Wheeler of Tyngsboro, Robert W. Smith of Chelmsford and Robin Gorgone and her husband Johnny of Dracut, his 8 grandchildren, his 7 great grandchildren, his siblings; William E. Smith and his wife Alice of Brockton, Richard E. Smith and his wife Ellen of Medfield and Marion Ferguson of Dorchester. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. John was sadly predeceased by his son John E. Smith Jr., and his son-in-law Roger R. Bigold.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 16th from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. A Funeral Service will follow at 12pm at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.st.jude.org.
