Obituary for Joan Marie Martin (McHugh)

Joan Marie (McHugh) Martin, 66, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Lowell General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of John L. Martin with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.

She was born in Lowell on January 6, 1958, and was the daughter of the late Peter J. and Veronica I. (Greeley) McHugh.

Joan grew up in Chelmsford and attended the Chelmsford School system, graduating from Chelmsford High School in 1976. She received her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Lowell, class of 1988. Joan began her accounting career with Sprague, Cain, and Cullen. She later established PJ Bookkeeping company, which she ran successfully for over 40 years.

Joan cherished her family and friends and was deeply involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was an active, longtime member of the Grace Bible Church in Dracut. Joan had a heart of gold and gave of herself to everyone she encountered.

Joan enjoyed skiing, bike riding, and gardening. In her early years, Joan played softball for the Chelmsford Town league as well as for the Chelmsford High School Varsity Team. She later went on to coach her daughter’s town league softball team. Joan came from a family of musicians and played trumpet from a very young age with the Sacred Heart Band of Lowell, the Chelmsford School system, and professionally. She also played trumpet with her siblings at the Town of Chelmsford Tree Lighting for many years.

Joan is survived by her loving husband John; her children, Kristen (Martin) Morales, and her husband Roderick, and her son, Gregory Martin and his wife, Emily (Desharnais) Martin; her grandchildren, Sofia and Camila Morales, and Riley, Haley, and Jacob Martin; her siblings Peter McHugh and his wife Linda (Jones) McHugh, Dennis McHugh and his wife Susan (Kupor) McHugh, Veronica (McHugh) Littlefield, Patricia (McHugh) Hamilton, and her husband Bill, Kathleen McHugh, and her husband Ken Roessler, Judith (McHugh) McGann, and her husband Joseph, Robert McHugh, and his wife Janice (Castro) McHugh, and Ellen (McHugh) DiPasquale, and her husband Thomas, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, and her brother, Kevin McHugh.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 2:00 – 5:00 pm in the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. Her memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Grace Bible Church, 517 Methuen St., Dracut. KINDLY GATHER AT THE CHURCH. Interment will be held privately. Memorial donations may be made in Joan's name to the Grace Bible Church, Dracut.
