Obituary

Jean (Remington) Mansfield McCaffery, a Chelmsford resident, died Friday November 30, 2018, having lived a variable and enjoyable life raising four children, volunteering in her community, traveling the world, plus a 22 year working career.

Jean is survived by her three sons; Jon Mansfield and his wife Holly, Peter and his wife Cynthia and Steven and his wife Debra, seven grandchildren; Jefferson and his wife Cheryl, Scott, Emily, Katherine, David, Zoe and Xena Mansfield, three step-grandchildren; Katerina Myers, and Kevin and Mary Hamilton, three great grandchildren; Noah, Jefferson, and Ellie Mansfield. Jean also leaves her sister Anne Remington of Marblehead. She was predeceased by her first husband Jefferson R. Mansfield, Jr. in 1976, her husband Francis X. McCaffery in 2010 and her beloved daughter Tacie Mansfield in 2013.

Jean was married to Jefferson R. Mansfield, Jr. for whom the Mansfield Pavilion at Lowell General Hospital was named after his death in 1976. In 1981 she married Francis X. McCaffery founder of Commodore Foods in Lowell.

Jean was born in 1930 in West Warwick, RI and later moved to Needham, graduating with honors from Needham High School. She was class secretary for three years, editor of the yearbook, a cheerleader, a class representative to Girls State and class recipient of the 1948 Good Government Award.
She then attended Colby College in Maine and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Jean graduated from Simmons College in 1952 and was the editor of her class yearbook. She furthered her education and in 1980 graduated from Williams College School of Banking which led to a 22 year career as a bank trust officer in Lowell. In addition Jean was an elementary school librarian in Westford.

Jean was very active in the community having served as a Trustee for Lowell General Hospital, Vice Chairman of the Horn Home for Aged in Lowell, Chelmsford Cemetery Commissioner for eighteen years, Chelmsford Library Trustee, board member of the Chelmsford Council on Aging and served on the Town Cultural Council. Jean was the first elected female senior warden of All Saints Episcopal Church in 1973. Other commitments were President of Paint and Powder Club and board member of the Lowell Day Nursery Children's Home, the Lowell YWCA, the Florence Crittenton League and President of Lowell General Hospital Women’s Auxiliary “The Taste of the Town”.

Above all Jean’s passion was traveling everywhere and anywhere, skiing in the U.S. and several times in Europe and friendly games of golf, tennis and bridge. A full life enjoyed.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-6 pm at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 o'clock at All Saints Episcopal Church, 10 Billerica Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY MEET AT THE CHURCH. Interment to follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Jean's name may be made to the Jefferson R., Jr. and Tacie P. Mansfield Memorial Fund for Employee Assistance, c/o Lowell General Hospital Attn: Philanthropy Office, 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854.
