She was born in Lowell, MA on May 13, 1925, a daughter of the late Stanley and Angela (Gerzezesik) Klatka. She was a lifelong resident of Lowell until relocating to Nashua in 1991 and subsequently to Chelmsford in 2017.

She was a 1946 graduate of the Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing where she had also been a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corp during World War II.

Following graduation, she worked for twenty-five years as a registered nurse in the Operating Room at Lowell General Hospital and, later, as a nursing supervisor at Solomon Mental Health Center, until her retirement in 1982.

She was, for many years, a communicant of St. Rita’s Church in Lowell where she was a member of St. Rita’s Senior Citizens and St. Rita’s Women’s Club.

She was also a member of the Middlesex Women’s Club and the Lowell General Hospital Nurses’ Alumnae Association.

She is survived by two sons; Thomas M. O’Brien III and his fiancé Marybeth Massimino of Chelmsford, MA; James S. O’Brien and his wife Mary Anne (Vieira) of Southington, CT; five grandchildren: Lindsay A. Fitton of Chelmsford, MA; Thomas M. O’Brien IV of San Mateo, CA; Tyler J. O’Brien of Los Angeles, CA; Michael J. O’Brien of Wolcott, CT; and Kevin P. O’Brien of West Hartford, CT; and three great grandchildren, Colin and Noelle Fitton of Chelmsford and Thomas M. O’Brien V of San Mateo; and one sister, Anne Miller of Boynton Beach, FL.

Sadly, she was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Thomas M. O’Brien, Jr., her daughter-in-law Virginia (Lovett) O’Brien, her sister Stacia (Klatka) Miller, and her brother-in-law Carl Miller.

Tom and I wish to send our heart felt condolence to Irene's family. We had many great times with both Irene and Tom, enjoying many lunches and day trips to Maine. So happy to have had that time with such a lovely lady.
Irene will be greatly missed, all our love, Tom & Rose Callahan
