Obituary for George A. Chamberas

On January 12th, with family by his side, George Chamberas passed away at the age of 86. He
enjoyed a full life, centered on faith and family.

Born in Goranos, Laconia, Greece in 1935 to Fr. Athanasios and Presbytera Artemis (Vloyianitis)
Chamberas, he lived through WWII before emigrating from Greece with his father, by ship, to the
United States. His mother, and two younger brothers, followed them a few months later.

He spent his childhood in Altoona, PA and later Poughkeepsie, NY; his father served as a Greek
Orthodox priest in both cities. In high school, he developed a love of running and mathematics; he
would carry a love of both of these disciplines throughout his life.

As a young adult, George moved to Massachusetts in order to attend Lowell Tech (UMass Lowell).
During this period he met his beloved wife Cynthia, and they were married at Sts. Constantine and
Helen Greek Orthodox Church in 1961. They resided in Chelmsford, MA where they raised their five
children over the course of more than three decades. In 1994, to honor the loss of their son Tom,
George and Cynthia worked tirelessly to establish a student runners’ scholarship in his memory.

Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, George began his career developing
radar systems for RCA and Raytheon. In one of his greatest career accomplishments, he played a
key role in the development of heat shield technology for use in space travel.

In the 1980s, he shifted his focus to real estate, buying and renovating properties. He did most of the
work himself, although he would often "hire" his children to help on weekends. He mentored many
others who also possessed an interest in real estate.

He was a dreamer, thinker, builder, fixer, writer, entrepreneur, and believer, and he instilled these
traits in his children and grandchildren. In his retirement, he drew upon his early training in
engineering in order to focus his cognitive efforts on the analysis of the commodities markets using
digital signal processing.

George loved the outdoors, and was proud to have scaled nearly all of the 4,000+ foot peaks in the
White Mountains of New Hampshire. He also completed the Casco Bay Marathon, and the 100th
running of the Boston Marathon.

George was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife
Cynthia; daughter Pam and her husband Jim; son David, son Michael and his wife Anastasia, and
son Anthony and his wife Bridget; grandchildren Arianna, Louis, Nicholas, Sunning, Thomas, and
Annie, and brother Fr. Peter. He was predeceased by his son Tom, his parents Artemis and
Athanasios, his brothers Efstrathios and Jimmy, and his in-laws Peter and Irene Dantos.

Family and friends are invited to honor and remember George on Monday, January 17th, at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Andover, MA. Visiting hours will be at 10:00 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. You are kindly invited to view the funeral services via livestream by clicking on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/user/AndoverOrthodox.
