Obituary for Frances E. Murphy (Ahern)

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Frances Eileen (Ahern) Murphy, 87, died October 15, 2022, peacefully at home with her family by her side.

Frances had 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, who were the joy of her life. With great frequency, Frances would say, “I love all of my grandchildren.” She meant it, and she demonstrated it. Frances was a woman of faith and was active in the Catholic Church and local prayer groups for over 30 years. The women of those groups and her other friends were very dear to her.

Frances was born March 28, 1935, in Quincy, MA to Frederick and Christina (Kelly) Ahern. She attended Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, and continued her education at Boston State Teachers College, graduating in 1957 with a B.S. in Education. In 1957, she married William R. Murphy, of Quincy. They went on to raise five children and were married for 53 years, until William’s death in 2010.

Frances is survived by her loving husband, James Melvin; her five children, Suzanne McDonough of Chelmsford, Christina Brophy and her husband Steve of Wakefield, RI, Brian Murphy and his wife Laura of Essex, VT, Peter Murphy and his wife Dina of Bedford, NH, and Karen Murphy and her partner Brian Aschetttino of Cranston, RI; her siblings, Kathleen Schnorr of Port St. Lucie, FL and Richard Ahern of Dracut; 14 grandchildren, Brendan, Kelly, Ryan, Kerry, Erin, Cara, Clare, Lee, Charlotte, Leah, Anna, Elise, Tim, and Mary; and 3 great grandchildren, Theodore, Taylor, and Flavius.

Frances was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Christina Ahern, her beloved first husband William, her dear brother Frederick Ahern, Jr. of Fremont, NH, and her beloved son-in-law Richard McDonough of Chelmsford.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, October 18, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 11:00 am at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY GATHER AT THE CHURCH. A private burial service will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Frances can be made to The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Boston, 18 Canton Street, Stoughton, MA 02072.
