Obituary for Evanthia K. Dukakis (Karatassos)

Evanthia “Eva” (Karatassos) Dukakis, 86, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 9, 2022. She was the beloved wife of Stratos G. Dukakis with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. Eva was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 23, 1935 and was the daughter of the late Panos and Theona (Donkar) Karatassos.

Eva was an amazing woman whose compassion and generosity inspired all who knew her. A graduate of both Armstrong State College and the University of Georgia, she became a Home Economics teacher, teaching in Savannah, Newton, and for many years in Lowell, MA. Her teaching extended to the Nashoba Regional Voc Tech community education program where she shared her passion and knowledge as a professional cake decorator. An avid gardener, she was an original member of the Golden Chain Garden Club and loved volunteering her time working on the Chelmsford Garrison House Herb Garden.

Eva was a dedicated member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, MA. In 2020, she was recognized with the Metropolis of Boston Ministry Award for her dedication to the church’s many ministries. Eva was an active participant of the Transfiguration Ladies Philoptochos, where she volunteered often to visit shut-ins and to bake thousands of cookies for various church functions. She was a long-time choir member, Sunday School teacher, and enjoyed welcoming new members to the church.

Eva called her four daughters ‘her angels’ for their unwavering care and love. She adored her ten grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Eva shared many wonderful walks with her family at various Cape Cod and Savannah beaches, searching for shells and sea glass. She also enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to bake delicious Greek foods and pastries. In addition to her loving husband, Evanthia leaves her children Elaine and husband Peter Berardi, Thea and husband Michael Tully, Georgia and husband Brian Genna, Mary and husband Derek Piper. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Alex and Matthew Berardi, Evanthia, Catherine, Stratos and Theona Tully, Alexis and Olivia Genna, and Eli and Sophia Piper. Evanthia also leaves behind her cherished brother Ignace Karatassos and his wife Georgia, her beloved sisters Effie and Elsie Karatassos, her sister-in-law Patricia Dukakis, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Eli Karatasoss and sister Elaine Karatasoss and brother-in-law Arthur Dukakis.
