Obituary for Ethel P. Eliopoulos

Ethel P. Eliopoulos, 95, of Chelmsford, recently passed away after a brief illness. A private funeral service was held at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell.

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Ethel graduated from Lowell High School and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. Subsequently, she was employed as the personal assistant of the chief engineer at the prestigious Stone and Webster Corporation, a well-known, world-wide company based in Boston.

Later, she assisted her brothers, proprietors of the Nabnasset Pharmacy in Westford, Massachusetts, in various capacities.

Her favorite leisure activities were spending time with family members at their beautiful summer home in Ogunquit, Maine, attending plays at the famous Ogunquit Playhouse, enjoying elegant breakfasts at Raspberri’s at the Gorges Grant Hotel, as well as memorable dinners at The Whistling Oyster Restaurant in Ogunquit. Additionally, she enjoyed spending time with her brothers and sisters at the Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, and over the years, attending various social functions with her siblings and her many nieces and nephews.

A gentle, modest and sensitive soul, Ethel relished sitting with neighbors and others chatting the hours away – and getting to know those people – while sitting under the great canopy at Ogunquit Beach as the summer days slowly faded away.
To those fortunate ones who knew her well as the years went by, she brought to mind the absolute truth of Thomas Gray’s lines in his classic poem, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard:

Full many a gem of purest ray serene,
The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear;
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

There were depths of character in this fine human being that have never quite been fathomed or seen and understood that made her companionship quite unforgettable. In her own quiet and unassuming way, she made her mark in life. Those who knew her well will never forget her quiet dignity. May her memory be ever eternal.

Ethel was one of several daughters of the late Peter and Diamando Eliopoulos of Lowell and Chelmsford. She was predeceased by two deeply loved brothers, Angelo P. Eliopoulos of Westford and Michael P. Eliopoulos of Chelmsford, and by four deeply loved sisters, Evelyn Georgenes of Jamaica Plain, Stella P. Kokinacis of Chelmsford, Sylvia P. Eliopoulos and Helen P. Eliopoulos of Chelmsford, and by three beloved brothers-in-law, Harry S. Kokinacis of Lowell, Charles Georgenes of Jamaica Plain and Samuel Zouzas of Chelmsford, as well as by two beloved sisters-in-law, Rosemary (Cox) Eliopoulos of Lowell, and Olga (Gamelis) Eliopoulos of Westford.

She is survived by three beloved brothers: Daniel P. Eliopoulos of Lowell, George P. Eliopoulos of Chelmsford, and Dr. John P. Eliopoulos of and his wife Bette of Swampscott and Naples, Florida, by three beloved sisters: Debbie Zouzas of Chelmsford, Regina Dabilis and her husband Arthur of Chelmsford, Christine Eliopoulos of Chelmsford, and by a beloved sister-in-law, Antoinette Eliopoulos, also of Chelmsford.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ethel’s memory may be made to the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church Kitchen Fund, Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Father John Sarantos Way, Lowell, MA 01854.
