Edward A. Oberzut, age 87, a resident of Hiawassee, passed away at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA on May 21 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Eileen (Blalock) Oberzut with whom he enjoyed 21 years of marriage.
He was born in Lowell on August 28, 1934 and was the son of the late Edward and Helen Obrzut, lifetime residents of Lowell. Known as “Buster” in his youth, Ed was a well-recognized personality in the Centralville section of Lowell having sold the Lowell Sun Sunday edition in front of St. Louis de France Church on W. 6th St. for several years.
Like so many of that era, Ed grew up on Rochette’s baked beans and Stoddard Bakery black moon twins. He was a graduate of Keith Academy and Merrimack College. Ed served in the U.S. Army Reserves and served during the Berlin Crisis. With his business degree, Ed went to work for Courier Citizen Business Forms and spent most of his career with Medical Information Technology (MEDITECH), a leading global electronic software company based in Westwood, MA. He had a passion for skiing and enjoyed the Vermont snow. After retiring, he spent several years traveling the country in his RV, which enabled him to visit friends and relatives in Florida during the winters.
Ed and Eileen married in 2001, lived 6 years in their motorhome traveling the U.S. and Canada; then settled in the beautiful north Georgia mountains where he enjoyed the view from his house of the highest mountain in the state and daily walks along a lake. He was a life-learner who enjoyed discussion and debate. Ed remained energetic and vibrant until a recent illness.
Edward is survived by his wife, Eileen; son David Novelline and his wife Lisa of Lexington, MA; his daughter, Donna Smith of Nashua, NH.; their mother, Barbara Oberzut; his sister, Doris Spurk and her husband Bob of Summerfield, Florida; his grandsons, Ryan, Justin, Joshua and Liam; several cousins; and countless cherished friends and business associates. He loved all immensely. Ed had a deep religious faith, was generous to all, the life of any party (especially the many he gave), loved Polish food and Polka dancing. He treasured his Native American artifacts collected in his travels, and his lifetime of pictures and videos to preserve his many family, work and travel memories.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 7 from 4pm to 7pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.
