Obituary for Edward J. Duffy Sr.

Edward J. Duffy Sr., age 90, a longtime resident of North Chelmsford, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Monday, May 30, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Eileen (Moran) Duffy, who predeceased him and with whom he enjoyed 62 years of marriage.

Ed was born in Lowell on October 15, 1931 and was the son of the late J. Henry and Theresa (Elliott) Duffy.

He attended Chelmsford schools and proudly served in the Navy as a sheet metal welder on the USS Amphion repair ship during the Korean War. Ed loved cars and was a talented auto body repairman who always wanted to open his own shop. In 1959, he founded and became president of Duffy’s Auto Company in North Chelmsford. Ed was very supportive of local entrepreneurs and community organizations. He was instrumental in creating the Chelmsford Business Association, was a past director of the Merrimack Valley Auto Body Association, a trustee of the Lowell Five Bank, and served on the Chelmsford Conservation Commission. He was also a member of the Chelmsford Lions Club and Chelmsford Elks.

Ed loved the ocean. He enjoyed many summers fishing for tuna on his boat in Maine and, in later years, spent winters on the coast of Florida. Ed’s Irish heritage gave him a wonderful sense of humor and he liked nothing more than trading jokes and stories with friends and family over drinks or dinner. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Ed is survived by his daughter Eileen Kaskons and her husband Peter of Chelmsford, MA, his daughter Martha McAuliffe and her husband Dan of Stratham, NH, his son Mark Duffy and his wife Melissa (Johnson) of North Chelmsford, MA, his eight grandchildren, and his great-grandson. Ed is also survived by his sister Nancy Small of Sandown, NH, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Edward J. Duffy Jr. of San Rafael, CA., his five sisters, Margaret, Rita, Kathleen, Evelyn, and Charlotte, and his brother, John.

Funeral Service and Interment will be held privately. For those who wish, donations in Ed’s memory can be sent to: Chelmsford Police Foundation, Inc. - 2 Olde North Road - Chelmsford, MA 01824.
