Douglas Eric Thomson “Eric” formerly of Chelmsford, MA and Wolfeboro, NH passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Eric was born on November 17, 1932 to Douglas and Margaret Shaw Thomson of Lowell, Massachusetts. He grew up on Christian Hill in Lowell’s Centralville neighborhood, attending the Varnum School as a boy. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1949 where he was the Senior Officer of the ROTC program. He earned a degree in Finance from Northeastern University.
Immediately after high school, he started his career in banking as a messenger for the Union National Bank. Traveling to work on the bus he met the love of his life, Margaret Ann Coughlin who would become his wife. They were married 57 years, until her passing in 2013.
While serving in the Korean War, Eric was stationed in Germany with the Army. After the war he returned to Chelmsford, MA which would be home for the next 40 years. Professionally, he resumed working at the Union National Bank. Rising through the executive ranks and later leaving to become the President and CEO of the Central Savings Bank in 1980.
Throughout his career he was deeply involved with the Greater Lowell community. Serving as the Chairman of the Northern Essex Chamber of Commerce and guiding the merger of Lowell’s two Catholic hospitals into what would become Saints Memorial Medical Center of which he served as Chairman.
Outside of work, he loved being with his friends, boating on Lake Winnipesaukee, and playing golf at Vesper Country Club where he served as President.
After retiring in 1999 from Enterprise Bank where he established the Trust and Wealth Management Department, he and Margaret split their time between their residences in Wolfeboro, NH and Bonita Springs, FL.
He was always a family man and after Margaret passed, he moved to Portsmouth, NH to be closer to his son Michael, his daughter-in-law Christine (Casassa) and his grandson Will. He was a great father, grandfather, and friend. He will be missed.
