Obituary for Archbishop (Dr.) David L. Makumbi

Archbishop (Dr.) David L. Makumbi, age 75, a resident of Lowell, MA passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Thursday, May 2, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Bishop Esther L. (Taaka) Makumbi.

Archbishop David Makumbi’s journey began in Masoli, Kampala, Uganda, on March 6, 1949, as the cherished son of the late Reverend John and Ruth Walakira. From his humble beginning, this second generation of preacher, emerged a beacon of faith and compassion, destined to touch countless lives across the globe.

After Archbishop Makumbi was called into full time ministry, he founded the World Evangelical Redeemed Church Worldwide. His spiritual footprint graced lands far and wide, from Uganda to Kenya, England, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Latin America and across the USA. With unwavering devotion, he traveled to nations, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, with miracles, signs and wonders confirming, and leading lost souls into the light of salvation.

Beyond the pulpit, David's heart overflowed with compassion. His love and generousity knew no boundaries, as he dedicated himself to easing the burdens of the afflicted. The Feeding Families In Need program stands as a testament to his boundless generosity, nourishing bodies and spirits alike for over three decades.

In the embrace of his family, David found his greatest joy. His eight children and twelve grandchildren were the heartbeat of his existence, each has a cherished moment of him, which is a testament to his profound love and devotion. He was not only a father, but a friend, a mentor, and a guiding light. David Makumbi's legacy transcended earthly bounds; his legacy resides in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. He was a gracious man of faith with a superlative anointing, a beacon of hope, and a paragon of love.

In addition to his loving wife Esther, David is survived by his children Jane Makumbi of Lowell, MA, David and Karina Makumbi of Braintree, MA, Esther and Maxwell Ngigi of Lowell, MA, Eleanor and Peter Sweet of Lowell, MA., John and Shannon Snow Makumbi of Nashua, NH, Anthony Makumbi of Lowell, MA, Benard and Jessica Makumbi of Lowell, MA, and Victoria Makumbi of Lowell, MA. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren Chistopher, Christian, Simone, Amelia, Madison, Jada, Emma, Zane, Elliana, Jack, Mia and Martin. David is also survived by his siblings in Uganda; Bishop Robert Kayanja, Pastor, Daniel Walakira, Pastor, Andrew Mwesigwa, Miria Nanyazi, and Archbishop John Ssentamu of England.

As we bid farewell to a remarkable soul, let us take solace in knowing that Archbishop David Makumbi's spirit shall forever shine brightly in our hearts, guiding us with his enduring love and compassion. Rest in peace, dear husband, dad, grandpa, mentor and friend. Your legacy shall endure for generations to come. Farewell God’s General, we will see you on the other side!

Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 4pm to 8pm at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. His Funeral Service will take place on Friday, May 17th at 9am in the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lowell Cemetery, 77 Knapp Ave., LOWELL.
