Obituary for Darlene A Sutton (McCormick)

Darlene A. Sutton, age 81, of Westford, Massachusetts, died March 6, 2021 after years of care and compassion at Westford House. She was the widow of Thomas W. Sutton, who died in 1992.
She was born in Steubenville, Ohio, to Ernest H. and Rotha (Lang) McCormick, who preceded her in death. She was raised in Weirton, West Virginia, and graduated from Weir High School class of 1957, then attended Marshall University.

After marrying February 1, 1964, Tom’s service in the U.S. Army took them to stations around the country and then to Germany and France.

By 1968, Darlene was back in West Virginia with two kids while Tom served in Vietnam and Korea. After Tom left the Army, they lived in Ohio, and then Michigan. Darlene worked in Taylor schools as a teacher’s aide because she loved kids. Tom’s job moved the family to Billerica, MA, in 1980, where Darlene worked as a teacher’s aide again.

From 1981 until her retirement in 2008, Darlene worked at Curriculum Associates, which she loved and had many great friends there. She especially enjoyed helping teachers even as far away as Barrow, Alaska, with their educational books.

She had an “I Don’t Do Windows” outlook, and t-shirt to match. She supported young people to further their education, was a proponent for the roles of women in the workplace and in life. Darlene was well known for her generosity and kindness.

Darlene moved to Westford to live with Jeff and Dawn in 1998, where after the three became a close family unit. Her favorite pastimes were going to craft fairs, reading, and puzzles of all kinds.

She had a boisterous laugh that could not be missed and will not be forgotten. When you see young children laughing, remember Darlene.

Though she spent half her life in Massachusetts, she always longed to return to the hills of West (by God) Virginia.

Along with her husband and parents, Darlene was predeceased by her sister Mary Alice and husband Benjamin F. George Jr., and her niece Bonnie Gaye Bailey.

She is survived by her children Jeffrey and wife Dawn-Marie Sutton of Westford; Lisa and husband Thomas Raisbeck of Centreville, Virginia, and their two children Audrey and Kenny. She leaves two brothers, Ernie, and her ‘nother brother Darrell, nieces and nephews of West Virginia.

The interment will be private in West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please support your local scholarships or donate to the charity of your choice in Darlene’s memory.
