Obituary for Daphne G. Freeman (Russell)

Daphne Grace (Russell) Freeman, 99, a longtime Chelmsford resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Emerson Hospital, Concord, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late State Representative Bruce Noyes Freeman with whom she shared 41 years of marriage until his passing in 1986.

She was born in London, England on February 25, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Robert A. and Daisy M. (Lapworth) Russell.

Growing up during the Second World War, she met the love of her life, Bruce (an American GI stationed in London), in Bournemouth, England, while they were both there on holiday. She worked for a time at Cable & Wireless along the Thames Embankment, and soon married Bruce in Pinner, England in April of 1945. She immigrated to the United States in April 1946 aboard the RMS Queen Mary. She also penned a memoir No Time for Adolescence, in 2008, about her experiences in war-torn England.

Daphne was a very active member of the Central Congregational Church for over 50 years, and was a long-time member of the choir, a former Deacon, member of several committees, a member of the Prayer Ministry, co-founder of the Benevolent Beaders charitable group, member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and the Kiselo Group. She worked for several years at R & R Jewelers as a salesperson. She later volunteered at the Lowell General Hospital, was a past member of the Board and volunteer for the Paul Center for Learning and Recreation, and worked for the Respite Care Program for many years in Chelmsford.

Her family was her greatest joy. She loved to play the piano, sing, read, watch the birds, and keep up with current events.

Daphne leaves her children, Bruce R. Freeman of Bedford, NH and his son Russell B. Freeman and his wife Edna of San Francisco, CA; Gary R. Freeman and his wife Jackie of Merrimack, NH and their children Eric R. Freeman and his wife Laura of Milford, NH, Leah D. Lyons and her husband Nathan of Merrimack, NH, and Jill J.
