Obituary for Consuelo Celmira Scarth (Carrasco)

Consuelo C. Scarth of Hudson, NH, longtime resident of
Chelmsford, MA, passed away at the age of 79

Consuelo died on Jan. 30th while under hospice care after a 3 year struggle with cancer. She was the wife of James E. Scarth.

Consuelo was born in Colombia in 1942, the daughter of Abel Carrasco Amaya and Ana Beatriz Correa de Carrasco, She was a teacher and was continuing her studies in philosophy when she met a Peace Corps Volunteer whom she married in December of 1969.

Three years after arriving in the U.S., Consuelo became a citizen, About the same time, she and her husband were invited by the Board of the Chelmsford Historical Society to be the caretakers for the Barrett-Byam Homestead Museum where she had been taking classes in quilting and spinning. There, she developed a keen interest in history, historical crafts and gardening.

In 1976, she and her husband purchased a historic home, the Lucinda Manning House on Boston Road in Chelmsford. Over the next 36 years, she and her husband lovingly restored their 1860 home, including adding a two story timber frame addition which they built themselves and, with the help of friends and neighbors, had a house raising.

Consuelo spent four months of each year processing the vegetables, berries, fruit, grapes and honey they produced on the original terraces behind their home. She also learned to weave and belonged to spinning and weaving club in Chelmsford. Jim still has many sweaters she made, some were from her angora rabbits and one from their samoyed dog’s fur as well as scarves she wove. She loved to travel and had friends in many countries.

Consuelo learned cooking and English from watching Julia Childs when she first arrived. She loved to have people from all different cultures over for meals as attested to by their guest book which people signed and made comments in. For Thanksgiving, she would invite over 30 people for the dinner which, in later years, was mostly cooked in and roasted in front of the fireplace,

For a number of years, she enjoyed sponsoring Boston Marathon runners and, later, many exchange students who went to Chelmsford High School for the year.

Consuelo loved having get-togethers, inviting friends over to enjoy guitar, fiddle, and harp music, a brass quartet and, once, a puppet show.

Consuelo is survived by her two children Adriana Lehmann and Orlando Scarth, her daughter-in-law, Karen and her four grandchildren, Lindsey, Chelsea, Mia and August.

Asked to come up with a word to describe Consuelo, Adriana said that generosity came naturally to her, always ready to help others. Orlando spoke of her ability to make friends wherever she went. Her friend, Sue Dawson, described Consuelo as compassionate, always thinking of the welfare of others.

We will miss her.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 1pm at the Barrett-Byam Homestead, 40 Byam Rd., Chelmsford.
