Barbara Jean Ortler, age 86, a resident of Chelmsford for fifty-eight years, passed away surrounded by her family on February 3, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Raymond Felix Ortler to whom she married on May 26, 1962, in Bristol, CT.

Barbara was born in Philadelphia, PA, on January 27, 1935, and was the daughter of Charles Raymond Orth Jr. and Eunice Caroline (Schaefer) Orth.

Barbara attended Terryville High School in Terryville, CT, and graduated valedictorian in 1952. She also attended the New Britain Technical School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1956. She later attended Gordon College graduating Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Voice and a minor in Psychology. She sang in madrigal groups as well as in the opera Turandot. After she married and was settled in Chelmsford, she taught private piano lessons in her home. She especially enjoyed teaching children and had many neighborhood children as her students. She was a long time active member of the Carlisle Congregational Church, playing piano and singing, supporting missions, and enjoying fellowship activities. From home she ministered to people by financially supporting many Christian ministries and needy individuals, sending mailings for worthy causes, and visiting people in nursing homes. She enjoyed painting, drawing, photography, playing piano for her church, singing, bird watching, reading, nature walks, flower gardening, studying Biblical theology, and spending time at family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Ortler, and her daughter Susan Anganes and her husband Alan of Dracut, MA, her daughter Linda Crompton and her husband David of Lowell, MA. Her grandchildren: Cassandra Van Der Hyde and her husband Mark, Andrew Anganes and his wife Amanda, Charles Anganes and his wife Rebekah, Anastasia Chung and her husband Jeffrey, Raymond Anganes, Theodore Anganes, Paul Crompton, Bryan Crompton, Emily Wiebe and her husband Devan, Lisbeth Crompton, Caroline Crompton, Ketie Crompton, and Ketia Crompton. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Amelia, Elias, and Ari Van Der Hyde, Abigail Wiebe, and Levi Chung, as well as her brother C. Alan Orth and his wife Mrya, her sister-in-law Gertrude Ortler, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her sister Lois Orth Hanson and her husband Lee, and her brother-in-law Edmund Ortler.

Interment at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Chelmsford will be private. Due to COVID-19, a memorial service will be planned for a later date.

Please accept my condolences on Barbara's passing. I don't believe that I ever met Barbara but I did correspond with her last year prior to the deaths of my parents, Jack (cousin to Barbara) and Joyce Cochrane. She forwarded a few photos of them from years ago. It was much appreciated.
