Obituary

Barbara B. Jones, age 94, a lifetime Chelmsford resident passed away peacefully on October 5, 2020 at Lowell General Hospital.

Barbara was born on January 17, 1926 in Lowell and was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Barbara B. Jones, and the sister of the late Dr. Robert L. Jones of Sudbury.

Barbara graduated from Hood College in Maryland in 1948 where she studied biology and chemistry. Her passion was in horticulture and gardening. Barbara owned her own business, Jones Nursery, which served the Chelmsford community for many years.

Barbara became very active in The New England Hosta Society and was highly respected and well loved by membership, both nationally and internationally. She was awarded the Alex J. Summers Award by the Hosta Society in 2012 to honor her for her many years of serving as a Master Judge. Barbara created several programs for tabulating scores for various garden prizes, oversaw judging, judges’ training programs, developed curriculum for judges and traveled nationally during her many years of membership to participate in local, state and regional shows. The New England Hosta Society also awarded Barbara the first Lifetime Achievement Award for her efforts on behalf of the Society and its membership. Barbara was also inscribed in the American Hosta Society Wall of Appreciation for her many contributions to the national and regional societies.

In her later years Barbara could be found working in her beloved garden. She was active in the Audubon Society and enjoyed feeding and watching all the birds in her garden. Barbara was also an avid sports fanatic and was passionate about her support for all of the New England sports teams.

Barbara is survived by her many loving nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the either of the following choices:
