Obituary for Ann L. McManus

Ann L. (Sullivan) McManus, 86, a longtime resident of Chelmsford Mass. and York Harbor Maine, passed away at Lowell General Hospital on Thursday, October 5, 2023. She was the beloved wife of Francis J. McManus who survives her and with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.

She was born in Methuen Mass. on October 18, 1936 and was a daughter of the late Daniel J. and Beatrice (Walsh) Sullivan.

Ann was a graduate of Newton Country Day School and went on to receive a degree from Cardinal Cushing College in Brookline Mass.

She worked as an Xray technician at Lawrence General Hospital until she followed her true calling, which was becoming a homemaker and full-time mom raising her 5 children. In her younger years, Ann and her siblings were involved with the family business, Michael J. Sullivan’s Furniture Store in Lawrence Mass.

She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Mary Parish in Chelmsford. Ann taught CCD for many years and volunteered her time at Sunny Acres Nursing home.

She had a competitive side and enjoyed playing tennis alongside her close friends and neighbors. She was also an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan watching the games faithfully in her later years alongside the love of her life.

Ann loved the ocean and spending time at her family’s beach house in Rye Beach N.H. and her condo in York Harbor Maine. She was a wonderful cook and hosted countless holiday gatherings at her home.

She played a pivotal role in her grandchildren’s lives, teaching them all how to drive. They all cherished her and will miss her deeply.

In addition to her loving husband, Ann is survived by her five daughters, Ann Marie Loftus of Chelmsford, Kathleen Sementelli and her husband Dominic of Chelmsford, Mary Ellen Nagle of Chelmsford, Maureen Gray and her husband Christopher of Atkinson, NH and Carolyn Quinn and her husband Chuck of Chelmsford; her grandchildren, John, Ryan and Deirdre Loftus, Danielle VanGelder and her husband Joe, Julia and Meghan Sementelli, Brian, Kaitlyn and Shannon Nagle, James Gray and his wife Shannon, Matthew and Jack Gray, and Liam, Dillan, and Shane Quinn; great grandchildren, Ellie Ann and Tyler VanGelder and Reese Gray. She also leaves her sisters, Alice Hart of Andover and Beatrice McDevitt of Wellesley, her dear cousin, Dr. Mary Alice O'Dowd, and many nieces, nephews, and close cousins.

She was the sister of the late Donal Sullivan and Kathleen Blaisdell and sister in-law of the late William Hart, George McDevitt and David Blaisdell.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-7 pm at the Blake Chelmsford Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 o'clock at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. KINDLY MEET AT THE CHURCH. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Ann's name may be made to Catholic Charities, 275 West Broadway, Boston, MA 02127.
